Visual Language 2

Today we are going to learn how to analyse images. We will start with paintings and sculptures because the issue is very broad.

We have to focus on two readings:

  1. Objective Reading: Theme depiction, Technic Aspects, Artistic Elements
  2. Subjective Reading: Social stereotypes, context and channel of the communication process, image function, image classification, group of people the image is addressing…

About pictorial techniques, look this video about fresco:

In relation to the historical picture The Coronation of Napoleon by Jacques Louis David it show us some lies. Do you want to know more about them? You can do it in Museum Secrets.

With respect to The Milkmaid by Vermeer, on essential Vermeer, you can see a big mistake on the picture, about its palette or even listen to period music among other interesting things.

I advise you on visiting Khanacademy web by Salman Amin Khan. It offers practice exercises, instructional videos about The materials and techniques artists use, for example among other things.

I would like to express my gratitude to Lindsey, the assistant, and Marta de Gonzalo who is always helping me with English technical vocabulary and her creative ideas.
